Also in the month of May, I got to assist the talented Christopher Gendron with another wedding! Two things that made this one stand out were the beautiful location (Golden Gardens beach in NW Seattle), and that the bride Shiney wore both a “traditional” white dress, as well as a traditional Indian sari for part of the reception. I have always loved the bright clothing of India! They were a very photogenic couple

The warmer it gets, the more fun I find to have here in Washington!

I gave myself a creative personal project: using film again! I really missed shooting with my Holga, so it made an appearance when Joel and I took our first trip to see the coastline Memorial Day weekend. Although it was raining the whole time, I had a lot of fun experimenting with double-exposures / overlapping frames. I’m quite thrilled with how the images turned out:

Other exciting news:

Purchased a used 100mm f/2 USM lens (in non-photographer talk, that means super-great close ups)
I will have two pieces in this weekend’s Edmonds Art Festival

Pensive!

Anyone who has been following my work for awhile is well-aware of my love for San Diego pop-punk-rockers Pensive! Not only do they put on a great show, but they’re so fun to hang out with. They used to visit me every time they came to Grand Rapids, MI. In fact, their former drummer even stole my roommate Laura away, and they’re still living together in NJ. I couldn’t make this stuff up! Anyhow, it was a joy to see them again – their first time playing in Seattle in four years!

I really appreciated that they played two brand new songs. They keep getting more and more creative! Now someone sign them to a label, please.
Julio, Pat, and Hope: Thanks for spending time with me on your day off. I hope we meet again soon!

Mom and Dad Visit

It seems like I’m always waiting for a particular exciting thing that’s going to happen, and since moving in to our new place, that big thing had been anticipating my parents’ visit to Seattle! It’s crazy how fast such events come and go. Luckily the weather here was as perfect as we could ask for – and we were able to cram in every “tourist” activity during their short time here.

On Friday I went in to work for a couple hours to finish the black and white film proofs/scans, was home around noon, and they arrived shortly thereafter. Joel and I gave them a tour of the building (including our amazing rooftop view), then we had lunch at Oddfellows Cafe in Capitol Hill.

Gosh I love that place (historic, great natural light, and yummy sandwiches). It is conveniently located around the corner from the famous Jimi Hendrix statue. If you didn’t know… my dad is Jimi’s biggest fan.

It’s really weird not seeing Everyday Music behind the statue any more. Luckily, it is still nearby.

Next we stopped by the Pike Place Market while it was still open:

I will spare you the story of the next couple of hours after the market… let’s just say: if a parking spot looks too good to be true, it is.

We got back downtown in time for the 5:00 Underground Tour, which takes place in Seattle’s historic Pioneer Square. Our tour guide Jim was pretty funny.

We got back to our place while the Red Wings were still tied in game five… sadly, it turned out to be their last night in the playoffs.

The next day I gave them a little tour of my work in Greenwood, on our way up to Everett for a Boeing factory tour! It was another beautiful day, the tour was neat, but no cameras (not even cell phones) are allowed in there

We took the 405 back, and made a little detour over to Snoqualmie Falls. Then we went to Fremont for some gelato!

I have a hard time resisting Jive Records when I’m in the neighborhood. I walked out with a Blondie album

Sunday (Mother’s Day) we did the Space Needle tour!

We tried Zeek’s Pizza for lunch… I highly recommend the Thai pizza!

And last but not least, we checked out the Experience Music Project… because they have everything Jimi!

I’m glad my parents finally saw “out West”. Everyone needs to! It was sad to send them back across the country… at least I know I’ll get to see them again in a few months

Concerts Galore!

The concert scene here in Seattle is really picking up now that the weather is getting nicer. I got to photograph several long-time favorites this month: the first of which was The Appleseed Cast at Chop Suey on March 10th.

It was my first time to the venue, and I really liked the vibe there. While waiting for the music to begin I made a new friend Kyle, from the band To The Sea. Check them out! You’ll notice this was the first time I got a writer for the review – I actually met Louis in the audience! I’m really impressed with his writing. I’m also pleased that I got any decent photos, as it was quite dark for the projection screen.

And this past Monday I got to photograph three of my favorites at El Corazón: Person L, I Can Make A Mess Like Nobody’s Business, and Copeland. I’m sad to say that it was Copeland’s last tour!

I have at least one confirmed show to photograph in April that I’m really excited about!

In other news, I am officially trained and working for Moon Photo in Greenwood. I love having the opportunity to use my film & darkroom skills again, as well as scanning and printing. If any Seattle photographers are reading this: bring me your negatives!
